Step 1: What does a doula need to do in order to accept insurance?
Actions 1-5 must be completed before enrolling with Medicaid.
-
We have created a checklist for your own use.
Once you click the link, select “make a copy” you will get a copy for your own records.
We do not need a copy.
-
Rhode Island Certification Board. Requirements are listed on their site. They can be contacted directly with clarification questions or doulas can bring those to office hours!
-
Apply for an NPI number here.
VERY IMPORTANT update for those starting their businesses:
For NPI there are 2 types:Type 1 for individual providers
Type 2 for businesses/agencies.
If a doula has a business name then they must apply for both a Type 2 for the business and a Type 1 for themselves.
Then when enrolling for Medicaid the Type 2 enrolls as a group for billing and associates the individual to the group as the rendering provider.
There is not a way to change this requirement.
**The NPI name and W9/EIN name must match.** -

Medicaid provider application is needed before becoming in network with Neighborhood, UHC & Tufts
(see Medicaid instructions on this page)
-
Fill out CAQH application. This is needed before applying to be in network with Neighborhood Health Plan and Blue Cross of Rhode Island.
Step 2: Medicaid Provider Application
Initiate a new provider enrollment application here.
This will need to be filled out BEFORE contracting with Neighborhood, Tufts and United Healthcare. They will want a Medicaid ID number as part of their credentialing process. You will receive this number when your application is approved.
*For those who already filled out Neighborhood’s application, please email Natalya at nalexander@nhpri.org when your Medicaid provider application has been approved.

Step 3: Join the Billing Service!
We are here! For those who are RI certified, enrolled in Medicaid and in network with at least one insurer can now sign up for our billing service. This is a $60/month service which includes access to Client Care to store all family information in compliance with HIPAA and log visits/births to be billed by our billing specialist.
BIPOC members have this service funded for 12 months as funding allows. These are allocated on a first come, first served basis. At this time, our organization is unable to offer this scholarship temporarily while we secure additional funding. Please reach out to info@ribirthworkercoop.com for any questions or support if you need. This page will be updated once the scholarship is available again.
There is no certain deadline for this, however, please allow for up to three days to receive your Client Care account and up to 2 weeks before seeing your first insurance client. Signing up last minute may lead to no urgent support trying to see a client on the same day and could lead to non-payment.
You must be an in-network provider with an insurance company BEFORE sending claims.
